These are the five events currently contested at every Olympic and World Championship event:
DOWNHILL: A speed event entailing a single run on a course with a minimun vertical drop of 500 meters and very few control gates.
SLALOM: A technical event in which times for runs on two courses are totaled to determine the winner. Skiers must make many quick, short turns through a combination of gates (55-75 for men; 40-60 for women) over a short course (140-220-meter vertical drop for men; 120-180 for women)
GIANT SLALOM: A faster technical event with fewer, more broadly spaced gates than in the slalom. Times for runs on two courses with vertical drops of 250-400 meters for men and 250-300 meters for women are combined to determine the winner.
SUPER GIANT SLALOM: A speed event that is a cross between the downhill and the giant slalom.
COMBINED: An event in which scores from designated slalom and downhill races are combined to determine finish order.
