Several UEFA countries did not start a serious cup competition until after the introduction of this cup. The 1998/99 edition was the last one; in the future domestic cup winners will enter the UEFA Cup.
La Copa de Europa de Campeones de Copa comenzó en la temporada 60/61 y su nombre se popularizó rapidamente como Recopa de Europa en los países de habla hispana. En ella participaban los equipos que ganaban la copa de su país (o el finalista si el campeón ganaba también la liga). En la temporada 98/99 se disputó la última edición y desde entonces los campeones de copa se clasifican directamente para la Copa de la UEFA.
