This medal tally includes all the men & women who have won at least 3 gold medals IN THE SAME EVENT in the Summer Olympics in any sport or event from Athens 1896 to Athens 2004 (both included). This kind of classification is a better reflection of the dominance of an athlete over the years and gives the same opportunities to all the athletes, as only one medal can be achieved every four years. This is more reliable in order to compare a team sport player, who can only achieve a medal per edition, with a swimmer or a gymnast, who can achieve seven or eight medals in only one edition (for ex. Aleksandr Dityatin, Mark Spitz or Michael Phelps). Those in bold type refer to individual events.
Este medallero incluye todos los deportistas que han ganado al menos 3 medallas de oro EN LA MISMA PRUEBA en los Juegos Olímpicos de Verano en cualquier deporte y prueba desde Atenas 1896 hasta Atenas 2004 (ambas inclusive). Este tipo de clasificación refleja mejor el dominio de un atleta durante un período largo de tiempo. Además, da las mismas oportunidades a todos los atletas ya que sólo se puede conseguir una medalla por edición, mientras que en el medallero total los deportistas de equipo tienen una gran desventaja frente a los nadadores o los gimnastas, que en una sola edición pueden llegar a conseguir siete u ocho medallas (como por ej. Aleksandr Dityatin, Mark Spitz o Michael Phelps). Los atletas que están en negrita lo han conseguido en pruebas individuales.
