International hockey is ruled by the IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation). The complete name of the competition is IIHF Women´s World Hockey Championship, which was first played in 1990 and since 1999 is held every year but the Olympic ones. 2003 edition, scheduled to be played in China, was cancelled due to SARS.

Las competiciones internacionales de hockey están reguladas por la IIHF (Federación Internacional de Hockey sobre Hielo). Los campeonatos del mundo femeninos comenzaron siendo cada dos años, pero actualmente se celebran todos los años que no hay Juegos Olímpicos. La edición del 2003, que se iba a celebrar en China, fue suspendida debido a la epidemia de fiebre asiática.
